How to Clean PVC Wall Panels: The Quick UK Care Guide

How to clean PVC wall panels - white marble PVC panel

One of the biggest reasons UK homeowners switch from tiles to PVC wall panels is how easy they are to clean. No grout to scrub. No mould to bleach. Just a quick wipe and you're done. But there are a few things you should do — and a few you really shouldn't — to keep panels looking new for years.

The 30-second daily routine

After every shower, run a soft microfibre cloth or squeegee down the panels to remove water droplets. Limescale builds up from minerals in standing water, not the water itself — so wiping water off is the simplest way to prevent it.

That's literally it for daily care. PVC's non-porous surface means no soap-scum buildup like you get on grouted tiles.

The weekly clean

Once a week, give the panels a proper wipe-down:

  1. Mix warm water with a few drops of washing-up liquid in a bucket.
  2. Wipe the entire panel surface with a soft microfibre or cellulose cloth. Work from top to bottom.
  3. Pay extra attention to the bottom 30cm where soap and product residue settle.
  4. Rinse with clean water and a fresh cloth.
  5. Dry with a microfibre cloth or squeegee for a streak-free finish.

That's it. No specialist cleaners required.

How to remove tough stains

Limescale

Use a 50/50 mix of white vinegar and warm water. Spray on, leave for 5 minutes, wipe off, rinse. Don't use harsh limescale removers — acidic chemicals can dull the gloss finish over time.

Soap scum

Bicarbonate of soda made into a paste with water. Apply with a soft cloth in circular motions, then rinse thoroughly.

Mould or mildew on silicone joints

The silicone seal can develop mould before the panel itself does. Spray a mould-removal product (like HG Mould Spray) directly onto the silicone, leave for 10–15 minutes, wipe and rinse. If the silicone is very black, replace it — it's much cheaper than scrubbing for hours.

Food or grease in kitchens

Standard kitchen degreaser or warm soapy water. PVC is non-porous so grease can't soak in.

Marker pen, felt-tip or makeup

Try a small amount of isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol) on a soft cloth. Test on a hidden area first. Wipe gently — don't rub aggressively.

What NOT to use

  • Abrasive scourers or scouring pads — they will permanently scratch the gloss finish.
  • Bleach (neat) — can dull or yellow some finishes over time. Diluted is fine for occasional spot use on white panels.
  • Solvent-based cleaners (acetone, white spirit, paint thinner) — will damage the panel surface.
  • Magic erasers / melamine sponges — they're abrasive at a microscopic level and will dull the finish.
  • Steam cleaners on extreme settings — high pressure can lift adhesive at panel edges. Low/medium settings are fine.

Caring for the silicone seals

The silicone seal between panels and around shower trays is the most likely place for mould to appear. To extend its life:

  • Ventilate the bathroom after every shower (open window or extractor fan).
  • Wipe excess water off the silicone bead, not just the panel.
  • Re-seal joints every 3–5 years or sooner if you see cracking, shrinking or persistent black spots.

How long should PVC panels last?

Quality PVC wall panels last 15–25 years with basic care. The panel material itself is incredibly durable. The two things that age first are the silicone seals (5–10 years) and the adhesive at the back (15+ years if installed properly).

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a steam cleaner on PVC wall panels?
Yes, on low to medium settings. High-pressure steam can soften adhesive at panel edges, so don't blast directly into seams.

Will bleach damage PVC wall panels?
Diluted bleach (1:10 in water) is fine for occasional use on white panels. Neat bleach can dull or yellow some finishes over time. For coloured or marble-effect panels, avoid bleach — use white vinegar or bicarb instead.

How do I clean panels without leaving streaks?
Two-cloth method: wipe with a damp microfibre cloth, then immediately buff dry with a separate dry microfibre cloth. Streaks are caused by drying soap residue.

The gloss finish has gone slightly cloudy. Can I restore it?
Try a non-abrasive plastic polish (e.g. Autoglym Plastic Polish or Meguiar's Plastic Polish). Apply a small amount on a clean cloth, buff in circular motions. Test in an inconspicuous area first.

Can I use Cillit Bang or similar strong cleaners?
Avoid. Strong acid-based bathroom cleaners can dull or etch gloss panel finishes. Stick to washing-up liquid, white vinegar, or PVC-safe products.

What about cleaning PVC ceiling panels?
Same approach — warm soapy water on a microfibre cloth attached to a long-handled mop. Wipe top to bottom, dry to avoid streaks.

How do I clean grout-effect PVC panels (printed lines)?
The 'grout' is just printed onto the panel surface, so it cleans like the rest of the panel. No special technique needed.
