Ordering wall panels is mostly straightforward except for one question: how many do I actually need? Get it wrong and you either pay for shipping twice (under-order) or have leftover stock to store (over-order). This guide gives you the exact formula plus worked examples for every common UK room type.
The simple formula
Panels needed = (Wall area to cover ÷ Area per panel) + Waste allowance
Step 1: Measure the wall area
Wall area (m²) = Width × Height. Repeat for each wall you're panelling. Add them all up.
Then subtract the area of any windows, doors, or shower screens that are taller than 800mm — these don't need panelling.
Step 2: Calculate area per panel
Each panel's area = Width × Length. Common sizes:
- Acoustic slat panels: 2400 × 600mm = 1.44 m² per panel
- Wide PVC wall panels: 2400 × 1000mm = 2.4 m² per panel
- Wide PVC wall panels: 2600 × 1000mm = 2.6 m² per panel
- Tongue-and-groove PVC: 2600 × 250mm = 0.65 m² per panel
- Kitchen splashback: 2400 × 1000mm = 2.4 m² per panel
Step 3: Add waste allowance
Always add 10–15% extra for cutting, mistakes, and matching pattern across joints. Round up to whole panels (you can't buy half).
Worked examples
Example 1: Small UK bathroom (full walls)
4 walls, average 2.4m high × 8m total length = 19.2 m² wall area
Subtract door (2.0m × 0.8m = 1.6 m²) and window (1.0m × 0.6m = 0.6 m²) = 17 m² wall area
Using 10mm wide PVC panels (2.4 m² each): 17 / 2.4 = 7.08, plus 15% waste = 8.15 → 9 panels
Example 2: Shower cubicle (3 walls)
3 walls of 2.0m high × 0.9m wide = 5.4 m²
Using tongue-and-groove 250mm panels (0.52 m² each at 2.0m): 5.4 / 0.52 = 10.4, plus 15% waste = 11.96 → 12 panels
Example 3: Living room acoustic feature wall
One wall: 3.0m high × 4.5m wide = 13.5 m²
Using acoustic slat panels (1.44 m² each): 13.5 / 1.44 = 9.4, plus 10% waste = 10.3 → 11 panels
Example 4: Kitchen splashback (between worktop and wall units)
Splashback area: 0.55m high × 4.0m wide = 2.2 m²
Using 10mm splashback panels (2.4 m² each): 1 panel covers it, plus a spare for cutting = 2 panels
Example 5: Home office acoustic camera wall
One wall behind desk: 2.4m high × 3.0m wide = 7.2 m²
Using acoustic slat panels (1.44 m² each): 7.2 / 1.44 = 5.0, plus 10% waste = 5.5 → 6 panels

Whatever panels you buy, you'll need trims for clean edges and corners.
- End caps: 1 per visible vertical edge (typically 2 for a single feature wall)
- Internal corner trims: 1 per inside corner
- External corner trims: 1 per outside corner
- Coving / top trim: length of the run if you want a finished top edge

Adhesive
For adhesive-fix installs: 1 large tube of grab adhesive covers approximately 6–8 m² of panels.
Silicone
For wet-area installs: 1 cartridge of mould-resistant silicone covers approximately 12 linear metres of seam.
Common ordering mistakes
- Forgetting to round up. 7.3 panels means 8 panels, not 7.
- Skipping waste allowance. 10–15% accounts for cuts, errors and pattern matching. Don't skip.
- Mixing batches. Patterns can shift slightly between production runs. Order all panels in one go.
- Forgetting trims. Trims are not optional in wet areas. Add them at order time.
- Buying the wrong width. 250mm tongue-and-groove panels look very different from 1m wide-panels. Check the visual you want.

Can I order one extra panel as a 'just in case'?
Yes, and we recommend it for most projects. The cost of one extra panel is much less than the cost of re-ordering and waiting for delivery.
What if I cut a panel and ruin it?
That's exactly what the waste allowance covers. Most DIYers ruin 0–1 panel in a small bathroom job.
Will I get the same pattern across all panels?
Marble-effect panels do have slight variation. We recommend laying out all panels before installing to choose the most pleasing arrangement of veining.
